Challenge : With millions of videos being uploaded daily, storage
costs were rising rapidly, and managing different video formats added complexity.
Solution : Octal implemented optimized video transcoding to
reduce file sizes without compromising quality. Storage lifecycle policies were introduced to
automatically archive or delete older or less-accessed videos, significantly reducing storage expenses
while keeping content accessible.
Buffering on Poor Networks
Challenge : Users in areas with low or unstable internet often experience video buffering, leading to poor engagement and retention..
Solution : We integrated Adaptive Bitrate Streaming, which automatically adjusts video quality based on network conditions, ensuring smooth playback. Additionally, offline caching was enabled so users could pre-load videos and watch them without interruptions, even on weak connections.
Personalized Feeds
Challenge : With a large volume of content, users needed highly relevant recommendations to stay engaged.
Solution : Octal built a machine learning–powered recommendation engine that analyzed user behavior, watch history, and preferences. ElasticSearch was used to index and retrieve content quickly, allowing the feed to update in real-time with personalized suggestions.
Scalability at Peak Loads
Challenge : During peak hours or viral trends, the platform faced sudden spikes in traffic, risking downtime or slow performance.
Solution : We implemented Kubernetes with Horizontal Pod Autoscaling (HPA), Redis caching, and auto-scaling EC2 instances. This setup ensured that the infrastructure could automatically expand resources during high traffic and scale down during off-peak hours, maintaining smooth app performance at all times.
