Core BizTalk Features:
PUBLISH-SUBSCRIBE MESSAGING ENGINE The messaging engine moves messages from adapters to the MessageBox database and from the Message Box database to subscribers. When messages enter BizTalk they can be routed to multiple subscribers because the messaging engine supports the publish-subscribe pattern.
ADAPTERS Adapters are the BizTalk components that communicate with applications and systems. There are two broad categories of adapters:
application and protocol. Application adapters communicate with applications such as SQL Server, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, etc. Protocol adapters support communication over various protocols such as HTTP, SOAP, FTP, etc. These adapters eliminate the time associated with building proxy components. Custom adapters can also be built using the BizTalk Adapter Framework ORCHESTRATION ENGINE The orchestration engine manages the instantiation and processing of orchestrations. This engine provides several runtime features:
- Short-Term and Long-Term State Management - This is the ability to manage short- and long-running business processes and their state (variables, messages, context, etc). This feature also includes facilities for managing state when exceptions occur.
- Interception - This is the ability to send data points to other BizTalk components.
- Feature Integration - This is the integration with other BizTalk features including the Business Rules Engine and Business Activity Services.
- Correlation - This is the ability to route messages back to an existing orchestration instance instead of instantiating a new orchestration instance.
- Convoy Support - Convoys provide support for getting messages in a sequence in a single orchestration instance. An example of a simple convoy form is an order processing orchestration that gets a purchase order and then an invoice.
BUSINESS RULES ENGINE
The Business Rules Engine (BRE) provides facilities for encapsulating business rules in a manner that doesn't require them to be embedded in source code. Business rules are grouped in Policies that are usually stored in BizTalk's BizTalkRuleEngineDb database. The BRE can be used directly from standard .NET applications, although it's normally used from orchestrations.
